Rose Bowl Classic

Georgia tops Baker Mayfield – It took two overtimes and a blocked field goal for the Georgia Bulldogs to beat the Oklahoma Sooners and Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield. In what will become an instant classic in the young history of the College Football Playoff, head coach Kirby Smart led his team to the first overtime win in Rose Bowl and CFP history.

A blocked field goal by Georgia in the first possession of the second overtime gave the Bulldogs an opportunity to score and send themselves to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. On second down, Sony Michel broke a 27-yard touchdown run out of the Wildcat to secure the 54-48 victory and send his team to the National Championship.

The Bulldogs did it the way they’ve done it all year, by running the football with their two young horses in Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. Michel led all rushers with 181 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He also added a receiving touchdown, his first of the year. Chubb put together quite the performance himself, adding 145 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Coach Kirby Smart also showed significant trust in freshman quarterback Jake Fromm, who finished his first bowl game completing 20-29 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Fromm not only protected the football by not committing a single turnover, but he also made several big-time throws on third down to help keep his team alive. This game could have gone either way with both teams playing incredibly solid all-around football.

Baker Mayfield Two Touchdown Passes

In his final game as an Oklahoma Sooner, Baker Mayfield threw for 287 yards, two touchdown passes and even caught a touchdown, en route to a 17-point lead before halftime. However, when given the opportunity to win the game in the first overtime with a touchdown, Mayfield and the Sooners settled for a field goal on 4th-and-1.

Georgia is now 1-0 all-time against Oklahoma as this was the first-ever meeting between the two historically great programs. Georgia will now go on to play SEC rival Alabama in this year’s National Championship Game, Monday, January 8th.
