Roger Federer, 40 years old, told a press conference that he was again undergoing knee surgery, for the third time, that will require many months of recuperation. Although intimating that he would like to continue to tour, and from the US Open, it may be difficult at his stage to ever fully recover.
Federer was one of the oldest players on the tour with the record of being the person to hold the number 1 rank for the longest period, 237 consecutive weeks. Far from the form of his glory days his rankings and match play have suffered over the past two years. Many hope that he may retire still ‘on his game’ rather than fade away unceremoniously.
