In fact, Mookie Betts has not only been great, but he’s playing at an MVP level. Betts finished second in MVP voting in 2016, but still hasn’t received the credit he deserves, considering how good he is. He is currently hitting .391, 22 runs, six home runs, 14 RBIs, two stolen bases, and an insane .481 OBP. Three of those home runs came on Tuesday night in a marquee game against the Ohtani and the Angels.
When you think of the American League, you think of players such as Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Manny Machado, but not really Betts. Why is that? Well, part of the problem is the MLB. They don’t market players as much as they should and even Mike Trout doesn’t receive all the attention he should. However, you could make the case that Betts is better than Judge, Stanton, Machado, and right behind Trout. He might not hit as many long home runs as them, but he is still a true five-tool player. Betts has won two Gold Gloves, has a 30 home run season under his belt, 20+ stolen bases each season, and can hit over .300. That’s pretty good if you ask me.
Of course, the Red Sox would still be a good team without Mookie Betts, but he is putting them over the top this year. The Sox won the AL East last season, but for some odd reason, they weren’t looked at as a serious contender. Mookie Betts could have been the reason why. He was very good last year, but he was not playing at that MVP level like he did in 2016 or so far this season. This year he is giving the Red Sox that push to put them over the top.
One thing I want to get straight, however, is that just because the Red Sox are really good, that isn’t the main reason why Betts is the front-runner for MVP. Being on a winning team shouldn’t be part of the voting process. There isn’t any player who could carry a baseball team. It takes an entire to team to win, but an MVP type player can put that good team over the top, like Mookie Betts.
And yes I know, it hasn’t even been a full month yet, but I have been all-in on Betts since spring training. He is a star player and has a great chance to keep his success going and notching his first MVP this year.
